Noa Kirel, an Israeli pop star, brought a lot of chatter to Sunday's MTV EMAs. She wore a midriff-bearing outfit with photos of KanyeWest. Also bejeweled with the Jewish Star of David. Kirel, who is a household name in Israel and will be representing Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest in the future, was named the best Israeli act for the sixth consecutive year. According to her, she was looking for a way to make a statement.
"I had this idea: after all of the anti-Semitic comments that Kanye made about Jewish people -- and he's Jewish -- I knew that I had to have something powerful on the red carpet," Kirel explains to Variety. Kirel says that she wanted the outfit to convey a message, and not be just a regular outfit. It takes nerves but the message was received.
Itai Begzaleli, Kirel's stylist created the look. It's a cross-sectional leather-gold look with Ye's face on the sleeves and pant legs. Kirel laughs, saying, "He was like 'OK. Crazy woman'."
Kirel was not surprised that the EMAs took place in Dusseldorf, Germany. Kirel also noted the contrasting iconography. The 21-year-old says, "After the Holocaust and all of that history it was very important for me to make a statement there and to bring my culture to represent Israel."
Are you sure that's a big fuck? Kirel adds, "Um, yes, that's what I can affirm," and she is now signed to Atlantic Records. She released her debut single "Please Don’t Suck" in July 2021. "I mean, that he said some terrible things and as a young Jew and woman, I had to react."
